Home heating is one of the leading causes of house fires. As temperatures drop, it's important to stay warm while keeping your home safe. Whether you’re using space heaters, wood or pellet stoves, or other heating devices, be fire safe when staying warm.

  • 1) Use portable space heaters with an automatic shut-off so if they're tipped over they turn off.

  • 2) Clean them each year before using them and check for product recalls.

  • 3) Unplug portable space heaters when not in use, before going to bed, and when leaving the room.

  • 4) Make sure fuel-burning heaters are designed for indoor use and are properly ventilated.

Working smoke alarms save lives by giving you and your family an early warning to escape if there’s a fire.

Fires can spread quickly, so every second matters. Smoke alarms help alert you to danger before it’s too late, giving you more time to get out safely.

Be sure your smoke alarms are installed correctly, tested regularly, and working properly—they’re an easy and effective way to protect your home and loved ones.

This week is FIRE SAFETY WEEK, It's Acknowledged through the increased Fire Safety education efforts by The Marco Houpe Foundation.

Electrical fire safety is important to keep your home and family safe. Things like bad wiring, overloaded outlets, or broken electrical equipment can cause fires. These fires can spread fast and do a lot of damage, but many can be stopped with simple safety steps. Knowing the risks and keeping your electrical system in good shape can help prevent fires and make your home safer.

  • Avoid pinching cords between walls and furniture.

  • Do not run electrical cords under carpets or across doorways.

  • Avoid electrical overload.

  • Consider having an electrician install additional wall outlets where you need them and add a breaker if needed.

  • Electrical work should be done by a qualified professional.
